The Pinto would, on occasion, run and drive ;-). Actually back in the day, hot-rodding Pintos was kind of fun. Ford changed the fuel tank setup pretty quickly as I recall, but it was too late to save the model from the perception. It's worth noting the original design met all federally mandated safety rules and regulations. A lesson in (a) regulation and mandates work (not so well) and (b) the power of perception over reality.

BTW, studied what happens to LiOn batteries when physical damage causes a short? I suspect the actual risk of EVs on the road in an accident is much, much higher than Pintos. Given the political pressure to produce EVs, it's not something you're allowed to talk about. A characteristic of the battery technology is that it can output it's full energy content in a very short (micro-seconds) time, which means a LOT of heat, which is a great way to set things ablaze.
