Long before the pandemic I got flagged from Facebook for posting a comment on a BBC FB comment thread that contained a link to Chomsky's view on Russiagate. I'd have to go back into my data to pull up the exact message and consequence but it was clear then that some algorithms were monitoring "wrong thoughts" and censoring certain websites. Ironically, I was able to post about, and complain about the experience on FB, which only shows the insidiousness and sophistication of western propaganda compared to the blunt censorship of other countries. Here, the authorities can say:

"What do you mean we are censoring free speech? We are simply protecting you from misinformation, and trust us, we know it when we see it. And look - you are free to talk about how you think we are encroaching on your freedom even though we are not...now...as you were, citizen!"

Sadly, a large swath of society continues to play along with this doublespeak.
