Sorry, no idea on the story--it does sound very similar to the children's song Big Rock Candy Mountain though. I don't know if it still has this function, but many years ago I posted on Alibris.com (I think) looking for the name of a children's book I could not remember and someone was able to tell me what it was. I'll keep an eye out for your story--always fun to meet people who love children's books as much as I do!
