One reason the US middle class is shrinking is because millions of manufacturing jobs were exported to China (and Mexico to an extent). If you want Americans to buy American you will have to make Chinese products more costly for them, i.e tariffs. And real tariffs, not just 10%. What was the import tariff on a foreign car in China in 1979? Probably 100% Maybe more. Why is it that the Chinese could levy these kinds of tariffs to give their domestic industries time to grow, but we cannot?
The second problem is education, the key to thriving in the knowledge economy. We should not be educating Chinese children at the expense of our own. No more student visas, zero, until the CCP makes real progress in opening the Chinese market and curtailing its hegemonic behaviors. But American parents have a role to play as well. They must take a more active role in their kids education, especially in STEM subjects. In the global village, American kids are competing for jobs with kids worldwide. When it comes to educating your children, American parents could learn a thing or two from Asian parents. The only way to beat the Chinese is to become better/tougher ourselves. We are already at war, whether we like it or not.
