Since we are speaking of chickens and eggs, perhaps it is also useful to ask the question why does the US no longer produce many things? It is because of misguided US trade policies which started in the 1970s and allowed Asian manufactured goods into the United States at very low rates of tariff (usually around 4%). Meanwhile important tariffs in China in 1979 we’re 100% and probably more. The message to foreign companies was; if you want to sell in China you must produce in China. Later the message changed to; if you want to produce in China you must export a percentage of your production. If the Chinese government can do these types of things why can’t the US government? In many industries we are starting from zero just like China forty years ago.
