It’s not impossible but not likely in the near term. Xi badly wants to come to San Francisco next month so we have seen a lowering of the collective temperature. Unlikely Xi will start any trouble. Second, the property crisis has hurt a lot of people and there is no way the crisis could have gotten to this point without official corruption or, at a minimum, ineptitude. A lot of people have lost their life savings and are angry with both the developers and the government - not in any mood to support a war. Third, elections in Taiwan are only three months away and there is talk of an alliance between Ke Wenje and the KMT candidate with the aim of defeating the DPP. I think the CCP will wait and see how the elections turn out.
