Nearly 60 years ago at the tender age of 19, I went to basic training where they had 700 of us formed up in a big space surrounded by barracks. They started to separate us according to religion, and after about 15 or 20 minutes all the Catholics, various Protestants, Jews, and others had been marched off, and I was left, standing alone, in the middle of the parade ground. Upon questioning, my sure of my 19-year old self replied without shame that I was an atheist. And so began a very interesting, if not particularly successful military career. I did find other weirdos not unlike myself, but a "community" was lacking, so my mental illness continued to grow, while my maturity did not. Sadly, it was not until middle age, when I got sober, that I began to understand these things. Great topic!
