DevTools Learnings at Y Combinator [Bottom-up really requires the “and up” part] Outbound outreach is generally tricky. But when your users are developers, this gets even harder. The idea is to outreach to the CTO, VPs, Director, and Head of Engineering while assisting developers in adoption and providing materials that demonstrate direct ROI to VP/director/CTO. So, think of users (devs) and buyers (CTOs/VPs) as connected but separate entities. Provide users with what they need to adopt your product and, ideally, share it with other devs. Offer buyers reasons to purchase at a team level and organization level (enterprise). I've been holding the thesis that 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 for the biggest markets are, in my opinion, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐬 for startups. 𝐖𝐡𝐲? Because the big companies (#Microsoft, #Google, #Facebook, #OpenAI, etc.) will eventually go after those markets with those exact (or better) products. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐧, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐨? Again, my thesis is: Go Niche! Bring your great idea to a niche market. Find a market that is big enough for your startup and small for the big companies. Even established players are finding their position threatened by new entrants or paradigm-shifting innovations. Two examples: ➡ In the news, #Deepgram faces layoffs due to funding challenges. The reason? it is competing with newer rivals including #OpenAI’s open-source Whisper speech recognition software, ➡ AI copywriting startup #Jasper, one of the early winners of the generative AI boom, has slashed revenue projections since #OpenAI (again) released #ChatGPT. Such scenarios emphasize the importance of agility in business strategy. Companies need to be prepared to pivot, adapt, or differentiate their offerings in the face of new competition. Beyond just the core technology, companies need to think about the holistic value they provide to customers, be it through specialized solutions, support, customization, or other avenues. The AI field is still in its nascent stages. What's considered state-of-the-art today might be commonplace tomorrow. People and companies need to be prepared for this rapid evolution. Thoughts?
