Ian McKellen --hotel gideon bibles.

Out actor Sir Ian McKellen, fed up with what some see as an antigay stance, rips out the pages of the Bible that denounce homosexuality each time he goes to a hotel.

McKellen admitted he shouldn't destroy Christianity's holy book, but he finds it difficult to curb his disgust with Leviticus 20:13, the passage that cited with condemning homosexuality, Ireland Online reports.

"It's the one thing I find difficult to defend but do go on doing," he said in the article. (The Advocate)

http://www.advocate.com/news_detail_ektid48536.asp

Leviticus 20:13 reads: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them."

I would not like to be in a room where the hotel management left a book containing the instruction to "kill all mixed race people". I think Sir Ian should be congratulated on taking this pro active step to help put an end to hate material

When I have a pen to hand I usually write "if you enjoyed this book you may enjoy reading 'Andersen's Fairy Tales'", in the inside back cover.

Her should also rip out Lev.18:22 and Rom.1:26-27 as well then.

Lev 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it [is] abomination.

Rom. 1:26,27 - "women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the
same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire
towards one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own
persons the due penalty of their error"

Just for peoples information....Yep those are pretty bad as well. I think the reason being that those are just saying it's a sin, whereas Lev 20:13 say's that homosexual should be put to death.

Leaving such homophobic literature in hotel rooms is not good really is it?

    Not to mention Revelation 22:18-19.
“For I testify unto every man that hears the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book. If any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life and out of the holy city and from the things written in this book.
Ironically, I think this passage was tacked onto the end of the book in later translations. :D

[EDIT]Similar passages can be found in Deuteronomy 4:2 and Proverbs 30:6.

Wasn't Revelation largely 'tacked on' at the end anyway? :D It reads like some guy's particularly bad acid trip. :D

There are a lot of books I've seen on tables and in waiting rooms too but I don't think I'd go so far as to rip out pages I didn't agree with.

Its not just homophobia in levictus.

Bred on night after the umpteenth time staying in a hotel, i flicked through a bible, and it says in there that its ok to kill a burglar so long as you do it before dawn, and if a woman commits adultery she should be killed.

Hahahaha. It also says further on somewhere that those laws no longer apply. I'm sure we have old laws too that are similar. ;)

It's not Romans, it's Revelation. The passage is widely taken by evangelists to refer to the whole bible (despite http://www.millennialstar.org/index.php/2006/02/09/p1461 suggesting that they're barking up the wrong tree).

Thankyou Sir Ian for continuing to highlight just how vile and disgusting Christianity is.

Personally it surprises me why hotels continue to endorse this filth - surely they are opening themselves up to legal action.

Last time I checked I thought inciting hatred, and murder were crimes.

Ah I was kinda just discussing the dodgyness of Revelation as a book but yes, I know there's a very homophobic passage in Romans (is it the "sinful lusts" one, from memory?)

Don't eat shellfish or wear clothes with two different types of fabric on them either. Leviticus tells us that's a definite no-no. So prawn sandwiches are out of the window I'm afraid.

I appreciate that some of the instructions have been replaced by later covenants (although which ones have and have not, depend on how the church feels at the time) , but the point remains that the passage Sir Ian rips out, is deeply offensive and should not be placed in books in hotel rooms (and some hospitals).

(I do actually wonder if he actually does it, or just says he does)

I'll bet you a tenner he does. He's always had a reputation of not holding back when it comes to gay rights.

All homophobic literature should be burnt nowadays.

There is no reason that we should have to put up with it for ANY reason at all.

If religion can't or refuses to change, then ban it!
