By now the name Tate McRae probably rings a bell.
Whether you’ve heard her new album, saw her recent SNL appearance, watched her iconic TikToks, or like me, found out she has more Spotify listeners than Beyoncé.
With that, here’s how a 20-year-old woman from Canada surpassed one of the greatest performers of our generation.
THE RISE OF TATE MCRAE
Born in 2003, McRae was first introduced to us thanks to her dancing and original songs uploaded to YouTube that pulled on everyone’s heart stings.
So much so that when she was 12 years old, she auditioned for “So You Think You Can Dance” and amazed judges with her incredible dancing abilities.
Years later, at 17, she would drop her single “You broke me first” which garnered over 200 million views on YouTube and, get this, one billion streams on Spotify.
The Calgary-born pop sensation would later release music with artists such as Khalid, Troye Sivan, Ali Gatie and more.
However, she would later prove that she doesn’t need anyone and can stand on her own two feet thanks to her recent smash hit “Greedy” that peaked number seven on Billboard Hot 100.
The music video paid homage to Canada, and possibly her upbringing as she once shared that her older brother is a hockey player, and if you look closely you’ll see our white and red flag staring back at us as the artist drives around in a zamboni.
Just this weekend, the Calgarian showed up to a Calgary Flames game and was all smiles while rooting for her home team.
Today, McRae has a total of 54.6 monthly listeners on Spotify, while Beyoncé has 50.5 million.
That’s not all, she also had more listeners than Lady Gaga (54 million), Kendrick Lamar (50.8 million) and Jack Halrow (53 million), among so many more.
McRae is gearing up for her 2024 tour and will make an unforgettable stop at Budweiser Stage on July 27.
