green white and red flag

Much has been written about the growth in popularity of Música Mexicana on streaming services in the last year or two. But Spotify has now drawn attention to another burgeoning genre from Mexico: Reggaetón Mexa.

“Reggaetón Mexa isn’t new—it’s been around for more than two decades. But this unique twist boasts influences from other regions, like the original sounds of reggaetón from Puerto Rico, dembow beats from the Dominican Republic, and electronic urban music from Panama,” explained the streaming service in a blog post, before dropping some stats.

Reggaetón Mexa streams have grown more than 1,100% in the last five years on Spotify, rising from 155m in 2018 to 1.8bn in 2023. The latter figure was up 96% year-on-year.

Spotify also noted that 53% of the genre’s fans are aged under 24, while 57% of its streams come from women listeners.

Artists including Bellakath, Dani Flow, Uzielito Mix, El Bogueto and El Malilla are among the most popular on the service, while the genre’s biggest country behind Mexico is the US – a similar dynamic to Música Mexicana.
