INDEPENDENCE TWP, MI -- A 15-year-old Independence Township student was in custody after police used a Taser to stop him when he allegedly fled from the principal's office during a drug investigation.

Deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office were dispatched shortly before 8:30 a.m. Monday, March 23, to Clarkston's Renaissance Alternative High School, 6558 Waldon Road, to help school staff with a student believed to have marijuana in his possession, according to a release from the sheriff's office.

The school liaison deputy attempted to search the student when the suspect allegedly pushed away, pushed the school's principal and fled from the office, the release said.

The sheriff's office claims the deputy tried to stop the student but the student refused to comply. The deputy then used his Taser to regain control of the student. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Police eventually searched the student and allegedly discovered several marijuana joints, according to the sheriff's office.

The student was confined at Oakland County's Children's Village pending juvenile charges of possession of marijuana in a drug-free school zone, resisting and obstructing a police officer, and assault and battery on the principal.

School administrators could not immediately be reached for comment on the incident.
