It’s five years since Spotify went live in South Africa, with the March 2018 launch representing the streaming service’s debut in Africa.

To celebrate the anniversary, Spotify offered some stats. Its South African users have streamed more than 1.2bn hours of music in the last five years and created 21m playlists. Meanwhile, South African musicians have uploaded 974k tracks to Spotify in that time.

Spotify also published a list of the top-streamed artists in South Africa since its launch there, and it’s an interesting mix of global and local stars.

Drake tops the chart, with The Weeknd in third place and the late Juice WRLD in fourth. However, South African Amapiano star Kabza de Small takes second place, with another local artist DJ Maphorisa in fifth.

Kabza De Small currently has more than 1.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and DJ Maphorisa nearly 1.5 million. Amapiano’s global growth is also shown in Spotify’s ‘Amapiano Grooves‘ playlist, which has more than 442,000 followers.
