ℹ️ TL; DR ℹ️

  • ALT staking goes live, empowering token holders to actively engage and provide economic security to AltLayer’s thriving ecosystem
  • AltLayer sets out a grand vision for our fast finality product MACH Alpha: which commences with ALT staking
  • MACH Alpha to support OP Mainnet and Arbitrum One

Alters, we are delighted to announce that the much anticipated ALT token staking feature is now LIVE. This kicks off the phased rollout of MACH Alpha: a fast finality layer built atop EigenLayer’s restaking mechanism. MACH Alpha will support two of the most popular rollups: OP Mainnet and Arbitrum One, and will be launched as an AVS post EigenLayer’s mainnet launch.

The ALT token went live this January, heralding a new era for us, and bringing in a new value layer for the community. Now — we expand on this. ALT token staking empowers holders to become active participants in providing economic security, and act as decision-makers in the wider AltLayer ecosystem — marking yet another landmark chapter for us this Q1.

Staking’s just the first step to bigger things: Introducing MACH Alpha

The launch of ALT Staking today marks the first phase in the launch of MACH Alpha. This will be followed by three more phases that will progressively introduce its numerous novel features, factoring in access for external operators, restaked assets and others, culminating in the final launch post-EigenLayer mainnet in the form of an AVS.

MACH Alpha is leveraging EigenLayer’s restaking mechanism to bootstrap economic security and build an open and decentralized network. It will be the first under the restaked rollup framework to serve two of the largest rollups, viz. OP Mainnet and Arbitrum One.

The Vision Behind MACH Alpha

Ethereum’s mainnet is the chain of choice for most rollups as a settlement and a Data Availability (DA) layer. Any new state of these rollups therefore needs to be finalized on Ethereum. However, it currently takes about 13 minutes for an Ethereum block to finalize.

Due to the slow finality offered by these rollups, latency-sensitive applications such as games and social apps built on these rollups often end up relying on the promise provided by the sequencer that at some point in the future, it will publish transactions on-chain. If the sequencers are centralized and have no economic stake, the soft finality guarantees offered by them have no economic backing. Over time, this also results in liquidity fragmentation and interoperability challenges across rollups.

This is where MACH comes in. In order to guarantee economic security, MACH Alpha operates as a dedicated Actively Validated Service, where users can delegate ETH or LSTs, alongside ALT tokens to any of the registered operators to help secure MACH Alpha. Stakers and restakers will earn rewards for securing the AVS in ALT tokens. The economic collateral is then used to attest to the validity of rollup states thereby offering a fast finality layer for rollups.

MACH Alpha will serve two of the most used rollups, viz. OP Mainnet and Arbitrum One. It will offer the following core services to end users on these rollups:

  1. Fast confirmation for rollup transactions
  2. Crypto-economic security to detect any malicious network participants
  3. Decentralized validation of rollup states

MACH Alpha’s Rollout Plan

As mentioned, MACH Alpha will be rolled out in four stages starting with ALT staking. This phased release will allow each component of the system to get tested in the wild before any new major features get introduced. It will also allow for progressive decentralization of MACH Alpha, allowing the system to stabilize and mature before being open to community-run operators.
