Henry Kissinger won’t have to bend when he’s knighted by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II next week. And don’t call him “sir.”

The queen will make Kissinger an Honorary Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, one of the top honors Britain can bestow on a foreigner, the Foreign Office said Tuesday. Because he’s an American, Kissinger won’t get the title “sir” and doesn’t have to kneel before the queen. The government is honoring Kissinger’s “contribution towards Anglo-American relations.” As President Nixon’s national security adviser and secretary of state, Kissinger was a roving envoy in the 1960s and ’70s.

Pearl Jam cancels shows when security questioned

Pearl Jam has canceled two sold-out concerts in Southern California, saying safety concerns expressed by a sheriff forced them to call off the shows. The band was scheduled to play in San Diego County June 26 and 27 but members decided to pull the plug after a newspaper report said the sheriff wanted the shows scrapped. A sheriff’s spokesman said the department only wanted to discuss security because the band attracts a crowd that usually includes moshers and bodysurfers. The shows were the only ones planned for Southern California in the group’s first tour in two years.

Retton will lead pre-school and early grade school viewers through physical activities, games and original songs designed to teach them self-confidence and outlets for self-expression. The series of 26 half-hour episodes is expected to premiere on PBS stations nationwide in January 1996.

Star’s bankruptcy filing aims to protect property

Luther Campbell filed for bankruptcy protection in Miami to keep a fellow rap star from getting his hands on Campbell’s property. Campbell sought protection Monday under Chapter 11 of the U.S. bankruptcy code. Campbell was ordered last year to pay $1.6 million to fellow rapper M.C. Shy D (also known as Peter Jones) in a dispute over royalties. Jones obtained a lien against some property Campbell owns. The bankruptcy filing prevents the forced sale of the land.
