Investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson and former CBS News correspondent Catherine Herridge were among witnesses who testified at a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on the Constitution and Limited Government hearing on the importance of a free press and what Congress can do to protect the identity of confidential sources. Ms. Herridge said, “When the network of Walter Cronkite seizes your reporting files, including confidential source information, that is an attack on investigative journalism.” Ms. Herridge at the time of this hearing was being held by a federal judge in civil contempt for not divulging sources. She further stated, “I can only speak for myself. When my records were seized, I felt it was a journalistic rape.” During the hearing, Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) condemned retribution against journalists who criticized the government and said, “That’s what journalism is about-being critical of the government when the government is doing things wrong.” close
