Katie Prescott: Technology companies are collateral damage in the US-China divorce

The most impressive stall at the recent Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona was by a country mile that of Huawei, the Chinese technology group. “Stall” is a bit of a misnomer. The company’s stand took up almost the entirety of one of the seven enormous halls at the European tech event.

Greeters dressed in neat uniforms manned the entrance, granting access only to those with passes. Inside the vast space, the technology company showed off its wares, from data centre hardware to the capabilities of its 5G networks. On the first floor, business was conducted in a suite of meeting rooms. Outside, guests lounged in a garden as a lavish buffet, coffee and cocktails were served.
