Since 1996, Nechama has trained and mobilized thousands of volunteers to help communities clean up after floods, tornadoes, and other natural disasters. Its dedicated staff and headquarters are based in the Twin Cities and many of its volunteers are distributed outside of Minnesota and across the U.S.

After deploying to several flood and tornado sites to help with clean-up, I was asked by one of the founders to serve on its volunteer Board of Directors. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck the Gulf Coast during my tenure and resulted in the life changing event of spending a week mostly in Mississippi the week after Katrina finding a location where we could house hundreds of volunteers who had little to no training as well as provide them with adequate food, water, sanitation, security, and meaningful work. I drove thousands of miles during the week and met with dozens of local governmental and non-governmental officials before locating a camp near Hattiesburg being erected by volunteer forest firefighters. Appointed for a two-year term and then elected to a second two-year term as one of the 18 members of the Board of Directors for our 2,000 family synagogue. Temple Israel is one of the largest Jewish congregations in the world and the ninth largest in the United States.

Elected as Co-President of 50 year old fraternal organization. Our handful of executives quickly transformed the brotherhood from an organization with hundreds of members but only a dozen or so active members to one with well over a hundred active members and increased the number of programs from a handful a year to a program virtually every week from September through May plus a handful of programs during the summer months.
