Jason Wilsher-Mills Brings His Inflatable Sculpture and Mixed Media Art to Gracefield Arts Centre

Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries presents an exciting free exhibition by one of the UK’s leading disabled artists, Jason Wilsher-Mills. From now until April 22nd, the exhibition showcases Wilsher-Mills’ amazing inflatable sculpture and mixed media art.

Wilsher-Mills, a disabled artist based in the East Midlands, worked with disabled communities from around the UK to design the work. Exploring themes of disability, this exhibition tells the stories of these geographically diverse, learning-disabled groups, mixing them with Jason’s own biography to create new narratives and myths about the artist.

At the centre of this exhibition lies Jason’s large-scale inflatable ‘Changing Places Argonaut’. The surface of the sculpture is richly decorated with text and vibrant ‘tattoos’ which tell peoples’ stories from the Changing Places Movement. The motifs on this artwork also give personal reflections about the care that Jason’s mum gave him when he became disabled as a teenager.

In addition to the inflatable sculpture, the exhibition also features hyper-joyful life-sized sculptures, kaleidoscopic ‘wallpaper’ panels, vibrant light box artworks, and films by the artist. There are also interactive artworks that allow visitors to engage with the exhibition in a unique way.

The exhibition is a national tour from 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, Scunthorpe, and is an Arts Council England funded project. Visitors to Gracefield Arts Centre have praised the exhibition, with comments such as: “This touring show is absolutely brilliant, so glad it came to our gallery!”, “It’s a 5-star exhibition!”, and “As someone who has been disabled since I was young it’s a really inspiring exhibition, I loved it, my son loved it!”.
