A Handbook for New Stoics: How to Thrive in a World out of Your Control

Rate this book
A pragmatic philosophy more popular than ever—here are 52 ancient lessons to help you overcome adversity and find tranquility in the modern world

An ancient belief system made new, Stoicism teaches us how to accept the things we cannot change and how to live a good life. It helps us improve our outlook, increase our wellbeing, and thrive in the face of adversity. But how does one live like a Stoic?

In A Handbook for New Stoics, renowned philosopher Massimo Pigliucci and practitioner Gregory Lopez guide readers through 52 weekly lessons, each based on a common obstacle. Stressing out about a meeting at work? Try listing the things you can control and those you can’t. Epictetus writes: “In our power are thought, impulse, will to get, and will to avoid”—in other words, our own attitudes. Discover what you can control, and quickly achieve peace of mind.

Featuring quotes from philosophers, analysis by the authors, and journaling activities, these lessons enable readers to reframe their perceptions and be happier.

This book came in the post to me yesterday, unsolicited by the Publishers Penguin Random House.
In all honestly I wasn’t going to read it, but pass it on to someone who has an interest in this maybe.

My daughter flicked through it and began to read passages from it.
Then showing me the “exercise” that can manually be input into the pages whilst challenging yourself whilst reading this.

I read up on the authors where one of them leant towards Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. Which in some ways, although this is based on Philosophy, is not entirely dissimilar in its achievement.

There were many things in here I related to.

Later I was talking to my husband about this. He always has a mind that veers to negativity when left thinking too long, then worrying and fretting on the future.

I read a few passages out of this book to him.

It was very easy to understand and take in, we found ourselves nodding and agreeing to many thoughts from this.

If I hadn’t had got this unsolicited book mail today I’d have missed out on an informative book.
In the usual run of things I wouldn’t have picked this up.

It’s a very good positive book to read.

This is a book for those committed to the Stoic life. The exercises are worthwhile and in-depth and could be scary for some. It is not a book you just “read” but a book that you “do”. On the author’s suggestion (as time would not allow for the full 52-week practice in order to get this review written) I did the recommended chapters and a few more to get a feeling for the book. There is a lot of ancient philosophy references and modern day examples which were a good fit for me.

I do not suggest that you pick up this book for a quick fix of what troubles you. It would be best suited to someone on a continuous path of self-learning and understanding of those around us.

This is not a book to take to the beach, it’s worth should be meandered through, reflected on, and questioned for one’s personal growth.

Favourite quote: "Worry less about the outcome of the situation, and more about how to build and maintain your character in the situation."

After exactly one year I finished the whole Stoic practice curriculum contained in this book, containing 52 weekly exercises illustrating the theory, but especially the importance and variety practice, of Stoicism.

The exercises are presented in an accessible schematic way, with modern day examples at the beginning of each chapter, and the practitioner is invited to answer questions and write down intentions on the book (or on the printables made available for those with the ebook version) before starting the weekly practice.

Also, each and every exercises is inspired by excerpt of the ancient Stoic authors, such as Epictetus (Pigliucci's favorite), Seneca (my favorite) and Marcus Aurelius (most people's favorite, as far as I know). And yet, a correspondence or an update with the modern state of psychology, logic and daily life is drawn in each of the chapters, helping the practitioner in framing the practice in a modern environment.

I can sincerely say that the book has changed my life for the better although the practice requires its good deal of effort and not all exercises are for everyone, as the authors themselves admit when guiding the reader into the process of building his own Stoic curriculum at the very end of the book.

Highly recommended both to experienced Stoic practitioners and to beginners alike!

Vale!

Your character is ultimately the only thing under your control.

Decide how best to live, understand how the world works and reason appropriately about it.

Our job as human beings is to be helpful and kind to each other.

Pay attention to what is most important in your life. Don’t be distracted by inconsequential or destructive pursuits.
Time can never be paid back.

Seek people who are better than you so that you can learn from them.

Speak less about yourself. Care more about others.

Turn difficulties into opportunities.

Changing the way that I think about something will alter the way I experience it.

Use neutral nonjudgmental positive language.

A Handbook for New Stoics by Massimo Pigliucci and Gregory Lopez gives reader’s a look at how the philosophy of stoicism can benefit them in their everyday life. Broken up into bite-sized weekly lessons, each presented with a quote from a leader in the ancient movement of stoicism, the reader is able to take on these concepts while putting them to use.
Reading this book, I became keenly aware of how many techniques I have used to work through stress and struggles with mental illness have actually been stoic in nature. If you are a person that deals with a lot of stress or has trouble maintaining logic in the face of emotions (which are not necessarily contradictory), this book can be a real benefit. We can all use some more practice being aware of how our thoughts are effecting our moods on a daily basis and in turning this insight outward with our everyday interpersonal dealings.
If you are truly looking to “know thyself”, inward analysis is a necessity. A Handbook for New Stoics is an easily readable, delightful handbook for turning thoughts into action.

To my surprise, I have been somewhat actively practicing Stoicism for over 40 years without knowing it. The way I have lived my life was forged in the bellows of tragedy and death from my early childhood. I have never spoken aloud the ways in which I have coped for fear of ostracism and judgment from others.
Now in my late 50's I find the philosophy of Stoicism to be as close a description as humanly possible. I am neither wolf nor dog here in this world (excellent book by Kent Nerburn) but my way of living it
seems discernibly similar to the Stoics manner.

Massimo Pigliucci has a tremendous depth of understanding for the subject and is a teacher at heart. He is able to explain complex concepts in very plain, understandable terms.

I strongly suggest this book for any person that has even a mild interest in Stoicism.
Pigliucci has put much thought into making this a different kind of book, a practical book. It says it's "a handbook for new Stoics", which I take to mean those new to Stoicism, but it could also mean new in the sense of "modern", as here you won't find talk of gods and other superstitions from two millennia ago.
I am elated to have this great book in my collection. I look forward to this journey with its authors and fellow practitioners.

I have previously read classical works by Stoic scholars. Yet, whenever reality later hit me, I would go back to my old self - someone who couldn’t control her temper, someone that felt anxious about uncertainty, and someone that was frequently swayed by passions.

I sincerely thought that I believed in Stoic ideas, yet there seemed to be an unconquerable divide between what I believed and and what I did. Was I a hypocrite? Was I too weak mentally? What prevented me from putting these principles into practice?

This books provides an answer. Only through repeated, intentional, and regular practices could I truly become a Stoic, or at least start becoming one.

Just like my muscles need regular exercise, so my mind similarly needs mental exercise. Reading Stoic writings made me feel good, but I couldn’t stop there. My feelings were only temporary. It needed solid soil to flourish. Without purposeful reflections and daily practices, the inspirations that these writings brought to me would soon fizzle out. Yet, I naively thought that just because I read these verses, they then automatically became part of me.

I have just finished the introductions to weekly follow-up practices.I look forward to re-learning Stoicism, throughout 2021, via the book’s daily practices.

The best starting point for Stoicism in my opinion. Has a passage from Seneca, Epictetus, or Marcus, then explains in modern language, and finally gives you an excercise. A simple formula that works well and includes everything you need.

The audiobook is a nice way to consume it.

If you sample this book, make sure to sample a chapter from part 2 and 3 too.

A Handbook for New Stoics by Massimo Pigliucci is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in mid-May.

Lessons are spread over each week of the year, progressively with the themes of desire (aspects of your life that you’re in control of and how tenuous they can be), action (patience and calm amid the unpredictable), and assent (reacting without impulsivity, not being quick to judge). Immediately, my memory is jogged that I received a daily Stoic email newsletter for much of 2016-2017 that followed relatively the same theme, i.e. a brief anecdotal biography of an important historical figure who embraced a tenet of Stoicism and what lesson or guiding principle could be learned from them. The idea to read the lesson on a Sunday and enact it over the next week with the assistance of self-inventory quizzes, suggestions on how a lesson can followed/embodied, and extra space for journaling.

Schitterend!

A practical guide to Stoic exercise

Massimo Pigliucci said that Stoicism is 1 part understanding and 9 part exercise. And this is what this book is all about, a practical book designed to train us to do the latter, to live according to Stoic principles, through 52 weeks guide that is supposed to be implemented in a year.

But Pigliucci himself admitted that not everyone can commit to a year-long exercise, and I found that the book can also be as effective by learning the lessons and embodying them in just few days.

To be perfectly fair, it might be easier for me as I have read 17 books on Stoicism so far and have practiced the principles since 2017. But still, while I have pretty much covered the 1 part of understanding, the rest of the 9 part of practice is more of a lifelong habit rather than a certain milestone goal trying to be achieved.

And this is where the book comes in handy, a refresher course as well as a new practical approach for implementing them, organised so neatly and in a step-by-step manner that makes it relatively easy to follow the flow of the guided lessons.

It covers all the major Stoic principles, such as the discipline of desire, empathy and sympathy, giving yourself an advice from the 2nd person perspective (from the outside view), looking at things from the other person’s point of view, practicing discomfort, anticipating misfortune, practicing view from above, night reflections, temperance during eating, embracing minimalism, speaking little but well, and so much more.

And among the whole lot, 3 simple insights stand out from the rest for me: 1. Nobody wants to do harm on purpose 2. To understand how to properly live we need to know how the world really works and see our place in it 3. The best way to avoid temptation is to minimise exposure to the source of the temptation.

All in all, in a larger scheme of things the book could serve very well as a next step practical book, to help us implement the 9 part of exercise after we’ve done with the 1 part of understanding.

Brilliant for a starting stoic

Brilliant and very insightful. Is a definite good introduction to anyone looking to get into stoicism but more for the person that wants to practice it and not just learn about some of its theory. Highly recommended even if a stoic life isn’t completely for you since it can help with anxiety and stress.

It took me a full year (and I still have tons of material to go through and exercises to do), but I'm a better person for it, with better habits and behavior patterns.

The quizzes included in the book showed surprising results...in a positive way.

I'll be returning to many of these exercises on a daily basis, surely.

A very practical book, almost written as a self-help book, instead of getting inspiration from the modern corporate giants; the book scoops the philosophicla messages from the great ancient greek stoics. Divided in three lesson plans- Discipline of Desire, Discipline of Action and Discipline of Assent, the book takes you through the methods of living a stress free life. Bother only about what you can change, not about something you have no control over.

It took me over one year to finish the book - as authors recommended one chapter for each exercise.

To make it short:
This book was introduction to Stoic philosophy which may be not suited for everyone. It may be a good idea to read it to people who want to start self- knowing journey on the next level.

In the end, this book with all weekly exercises made my Sundays a bit more fun!

A really good practical curriculum for Stoicism

Stoicism is not a pen-and-paper philosophy, but one meant for practical living, and this book offers a year-long curriculum (52 lessons for 52 weeks) practicing different aspects of this philosophy. This makes a really good practical curriculum for those that want to try living Stoicism.

I purchased this book a couple months ago. It would have been the perfect book to have begun during the COVID-19 lockdown and blog about it as I read. That was the plan. Life got in the way, which is okay. I still intend to work through the book, one week at a time and blog about it as I do, but that will wait until the move occurs. Meanwhile, I read and listened to the book in a straight shot read. I think this is a good way to approach this so I know how the book is presented, the kinds of activities, etc.

First of all, the audiobook was read by Rupert Farley. I loved this man's presentation of this book. He read so well; it was a delight to listen to him. Truly a highlight.

The book is laid out in 52 lessons, one per wekk for a year. Each lesson presents a stoic principle, a reading from one of the biggies (Epictetus, Seneca, or Marcus Aurelius), an interpretation in modern language of the lesson, activities to practice the lesson for the week, and a reflective exercise at the end of the week. Each lesson had the same structure.

The lessons were divided among the three areas Epictetus stated stoicism addresses: The Discipline of Desire, The Discipline of Action, and The Discipline of Assent.

From reading this, I recognize that I already am in good shape with a lot of what is addressed and there are lessons for an area I know I still need to battle. It also helped me break beyond the classic stereotype of stoic indifference to the world that was first cultivated during my college days. I have a better understanding of where this is going and at the outset is something I am comfortable pursuing. I look forward to working through this as intended.

A Handbook for New Stoics (Um Manual para Novos Estóicos) - Massimo Pigliucci | 336 pgs, The Experiment, 2019 | Nota 7/10 | Auto Ajuda, Filosofia | NITROLEITURAS

Stoicism is an ancient philosophy, but it is one that remains highly relevant today. To understand the basics of Stoicism, you should know that it is based on three fundamental ideas: living in harmony with nature, understanding the dichotomy of control, and following a three-disciplined practice. The practice begins with the Discipline of Desire, which is about understanding what is and isn’t in our control; then, the Discipline of Action teaches us how to navigate difficult social situations; and the Discipline of Assent is about making better judgments and internalizing the principles.

Actionable advice:

Let go of “good” and “bad.”

Was last week bad? Is having lots of money good? As far as Stoics are concerned, neither of these statements track. The only thing you should consider good and bad are things related to your character. For the Stoics, as well as Socrates, the only good is virtue, and the only bad is vice. So, statements like “I behaved badly around him,” or “It’s a good idea for me to help her,” make sense, but statements like “This apple is bad,” or “Last week was bad,” don’t make sense from a rational perspective, because these aren’t facts. The fact is an apple can’t be good or bad; it just is what it is.

This may sound like fussing over semantics, but it’s more than that. The Stoics believed we shouldn’t assign value judgments to things outside our control. When you do that, you’re actually establishing preferences and assigning emotions in ways that can affect your decision making and steer you away from virtue, which really is bad.
