Music marketing startup Your Music Marketing (Y2M) has published a report based on its analysis of more than 25.3bn Spotify streams for ‘several hundred’ artists.
The report focuses on Spotify’s algorithmic playlists and mixes: its radio feature, Daily Mix, Discover Weekly, Release Radar, On Repeat and Repeat Rewind playlists.
18.7% of the analysed streams (dating back to 2015) came from this algorithmic programming, although Y2M says that in the last 12 months the percentage is just over 21%.
The report applies this to Spotify’s share of the global streaming market, suggesting that its recommendation algorithms may thus account for “between $858m and $1.16bn” of the music-streaming industry’s revenues.
The study also compares emerging artists to the most popular musicians.
“On average, emerging artists have almost two-thirds of programmed listens (59.9%). These streams come mainly from user playlists. For the most popular artists, the trend reverses: they have about two-thirds of active listens (64.2%),” it claims.
