China’s Global Security Initiative

This event is taking place in Committee Room 8 of the Palace of Westminster. For those entering Parliament please enter the Palace of Westminster through the Cromwell Green entrance.  Please allow at least 20 minutes to get through security and to make your way to the Committee Corridor. Once through security visitor Assistants in Westminster Hall will direct you to the Central Lobby. Follow the signage to the Committee Corridor, from there the Attendants can help you find Committee Room 8.

The Global Security Initiative (GSI) represents the ramping up of an ongoing effort by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to shape the international order to better suit its interests and ambitions. Through the GSI, the CCP is offering an alternative global governance and security framework to the current one dominated by liberal-democratic nations, which the CCP insists is failing. Only announced in April 2022 the GSI is light on details, but its investigation highlights the People’s Republic of China’s geopolitical objectives and where the CCP currently sees the country’s position on the world stage.

Chris Cash

• Research Lead, China Research Group
  Chris Cash is the Research Lead at the China Research Group. He previously worked for the British Council in Hangzhou, China. He holds an MSc in China and Globalisation from the Lau China Institute at King’s College London and an MA in Modern History from the University of St Andrews.

Sam Hogg

• Founder, Beijing to Britain
  Sam Hogg is the founder of the intelligence briefing Beijing to Britain, and previously worked on a China brief in parliament.

Alicia Kearns MP

• Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, House of Commons
  Alicia Kearns has been the Member of Parliament for Rutland and Melton since 2019. She studied social and political sciences at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, graduating in 2009. Alicia previously worked in communication roles at the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Justice, and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. She has been a member of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee since March 2020, and in October 2022 was elected the Committee Chair.

• Researcher, Council on Geostrategy
  Patrick Triglavcanin is a Research Assistant at the Council on Geostrategy. He holds a BA in Sociolegal Studies from the University of Western Australia and a Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations and National Security (1st Class Hons.) from Curtin University. He specialises in Indo-Pacific geopolitics.
