UNFCCC website | COP27 Presidency website | UNEP at the climate COP27 | Spotlight on climate action

Science has established beyond doubt that the window for climate action is closing rapidly. In November 2022, Egypt will host the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, with a view to building on previous successes and paving the way for future ambition.

A golden opportunity for all stakeholders to rise to the occasion and tackle effectively the global challenge of climate change facilitated by Egypt on the African continent.

Egypt assumes the incoming Presidency of COP 27 with a clear recognition of the gravity of the global climate challenge and appreciation of the value of multilateral, collective and concerted action as the only means to address this truly global threat.

Representatives from UNEP are organizing and/or taking part in the following events:

3 November | 15:00 EDT | Climate Action Day

In light of the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference, COP27, students and teachers from across the world will get together at a global online discussion to share ideas, solutions, and innovative projects for climate action. In an interactive session, youth leaders and innovators will present their ideas and recommendations. The online event will be an opportunity for schools to showcase their sustainability practices and environmental projects.

11 November | 09:30 – 10:15 GMT+2 | Circularity Gap Report for Latin America and the Caribbean 'Establishing a regional baseline for the Circular Economy'

The objective of this side-event is to present and discuss the methodology to develop the Circularity Gap Report for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), which will establish a baseline on circular economy for the LAC region and will bring an understanding of the key sectors, materials, and kinds of strategies that should be prioritized to achieve a circular economy.  The report will allow the region to be compared with other geographies and will be the first to gather data on the circular economy in LAC.

11 November | 15:00 – 16:00 GMT+2 | Advancing toward the Glasgow Climate Pact: a call to action to achieve one gigaton of emissions reductions from forests by 2025

It is critical to mobilize funding to achieve the goal of a 1 gigaton of emissions reductions from forests by 2025. Members of the Green Gigaton Challenge will (i) address the importance of adopting a mid-term milestone towards the Glasgow Pledge; (ii) provide an overview of the gap towards achieving the gigaton milestone; and (iii) propose changes in policies/incentives to achieve that milestone.

12 November | 09:00 – 10:00 GMT+2 | Unlocking Private Sector Finance For Climate Adaptation

This side event showcases ways to engage with the private sector early in the elaboration and implementation of national adaptation processes, and to crowd in private sector finance for their implementation using innovation and blended finance approaches. Climate change comes at a cost and adaptation planning is a solution that makes economic sense for the private sector operations. The session will bring out key messages on best practices to mainstream private sector engagement in National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), and concrete examples on financial solutions to attract and de-risk private sector investments.

12 November | 09:30 – 10:00 EET | Insights from UNEP’s Adaptation Gap Report

The session will present the key findings of the Adaptation Gap Report 2022 considering, where possible, Nordic perspectives.

14 November | 11:30 – 13:00 GMT+2 | Launch of WASP Science for Adaptation Policy Brief: Global Goal on Adaptation

The WASP Science-for-Adaptation Policy Brief on the Global Goal on Adaptation is the sixth issue in the series published by seven UN agencies that form the World Adaptation Science Programme (WASP). This issue discusses the Global Goal on Adaptation and its adequacy of adaptive response commensurate with the temperature goal of the Paris Agreement and a collective effort is required to operationalize the Global Goal on Adaptation, noting that there are no agreed frameworks, methods, indicators, or metrics to assess progress towards the Global Goal on Adaptation.

14 November | 16:45 – 18:15 GMT+2 | Enhancing climate action through peatlands

This COP27 side event aims to demonstrate how countries have integrated, enhanced, or are implementing peatland-related climate commitments, particularly those contained in NDCs, sharing multi-stakeholder and innovative collaborative management approaches and inspiring countries to consider or further enhance climate action in peatland landscapes. Case examples from different regions will be presented, highlighting good practices and lessons learned.

15 November | 13:15 – 14:45 GMT+2 | Special Event: The Emissions Gap Report 2022

This joint UNFCCC and UNEP special event features high-level opening remarks and a presentation of the key findings of the UNEP Emissions Gap Report 2022.

16 November | 11:30 - 12:30 EET | Accelerating to Net Zero in the New Energy Paradigm

In this COP27 side event leaders from public and private sectors will discuss opportunities to accelerate progress towards net zero in both hard-to-abate industries and emerging economies.

16 November | 13:15 GMT+2 | Accelerating young skills and talent for green jobs

The COP 27 side event is a unique opportunity to launch the Green Jobs for Youth Pact and enhance collaboration between governments, youth, employers’ and workers’ organizations, and educators working together to promote a just transition by strengthening capacities and skills, for youth, needed to deliver an economic and social transformation in a 1.5 degree world.

16 November | 18:30 – 20:00 CET | Pathways to Sustainable Building Markets through lifecycle-based Information

In 2020, the buildings and construction sector accounted for almost 40% of global energy-related GHG emissions, 35% of final energy demand, and a large share of global resource extraction (2021 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction, GlobalABC). How we construct our buildings and cities is an example of unsustainable consumption and production practices. Hence, without a doubt the way we build and use our buildings must change if we are to reach the climate change mitigation targets set out in the Paris Agreement.

16 November | 20:00 GMT+2 | Youth leadership to finance and accelerate global climate action solutions

By contributing to priorities on meaningful youth engagement, as outlined in the Glasgow Climate Pact, the UN’s Youth 2030 Strategy and Our Common Agenda, the event will highlight the importance of youth leadership for accelerated climate action on the ground. It will gather young climate leaders, UN experts, civil society, private sector, youth constituencies and national governments to co-create solutions to bridge youth finance gaps.
