The top House Republican is slated to visit the southern border Tuesday and meet with U.S. Border Patrol employees in El Paso, Texas, the new epicenter of the border crisis.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy will travel to West Texas along with six other Republicans, including four Texans.

McCarthy will sit in on federal law enforcement briefings about how the government is handling the record-high number of immigrants illegally crossing in the region.

The group will thank homeland security employees for their service to the United States ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. McCarthy will make a “major” announcement about Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, according to a Fox News reporter.

Some House Republicans have threatened to impeach Mayorkas if they won back a majority in the 2022 midterm elections. Under Mayorkas, the U.S. has seen more noncitizens encountered at the nation’s borders than any period in history.

“He’s utterly failed at protecting Americans and he is insulting the intelligence of every single American by saying that the border is secure,” Texas GOP Rep. August Pfluger told the Washington Examiner Tuesday.

Pfluger has called for Mayorkas’s resignation and would support impeachment in the new Congress, noting Republicans would need to make a serious case against the cabinet secretary.

“His legacy is going to be an open border and allowing criminals, drugs, and terrorists into our country. He needs to resign and we are committed to oversight,” Pfluger added ahead of the El Paso trip.

Border Patrol’s El Paso sector is one of nine sectors on the southern border. Last month, federal police encountered 53,284 illegal immigrants, most of whom came over between the ports of entry.

El Paso is seeing more illegal immigration than the historic record-holder, the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

Other members of Congress joining McCarthy include Pfluger, GOP Texas Reps. Brian Babin, Dan Crenshaw, and Tony Gonzales; Rep. Mark Green of Tennessee, and Rep. Kat Cammack of Florida.
