Episode Description
With all the crazy, scary things happening in the world... we need LAUGHTER more than ever! It's as essential as air and water to keep us alive. Yet, some have lost their sense of humor. Cancel culture is trying to take our comedians away by suing them and the venues that dare to host them - from comedy clubs to streaming video services! Today's guest, New York attorney Carl Unegbu, is the author of the new book, COMEDY GOES TO COURT: When People Stop Laughing and Start Fighting. He's considered the foremost authority on comedy and the law. He says, "There may be far worse things for comedians or comedy actors to worry about than having a string of jokes bomb. Just ask Dave Chappelle, Conan O’Brien, Howard Stern, Adam Carolla, Charlie Sheen, Jon Lovitz, Jimmy Kimmel, John Oliver, Jay Leno and a host of others. What they should be concerned about are the details that keep them out of the courtroom!" Unegbu will talk about this minefield that such comics have to cross, including: the right of comedians to free speech, copping the work or appearance of somebody else, comedians getting in trouble onstage and offstage, when the funny goes silly and the intersection crisis between comedy and other people’s lives.
