Wind farm set to be destroyed and converted into coal mine

A wind farm in Germany is set to be destroyed to make room for the expansion of a coal mine.

German energy company RWE is defending its decision to expand its Garzweiler coal mine in and around the small town of Lutzerath, despite it appearing to be “paradoxical.”

“We realize this comes across as paradoxical,” RWE spokesman Guido Steffen said in a statement to Fox Business. “But that is as matters stand.”

One of the Keyenberg wind farm’s high turbines was reportedly taken down last week. Two other turbines are set to be dismantled next year, with the remaining five to come down by the end of 2023.

The wind farm and coal mine are located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Ministry of Economy of North Rhine-Westphalia also said the expansion will strengthen the energy supply following a court ruling that found alternative use of surface mines would not suffice.

“If Lutzerath were to be preserved, the production volume required to maintain the security of supply over the next eight years could not be achieved, the stability of the opencast mine could not be guaranteed and the necessary recultivation could not be carried out,” it said, according to Balkan Green Energy News.

Climate activists have reportedly called the decision cynical and hypocritical following North Rhine-Westphalia and RWE previously saying they would stop fossil fuel use by 2030.
