Survey Introduction:
We invite you to participate in a survey conducted on behalf of the Global Network for Popular Transportation, a collaborative community comprising researchers, consultants, advocates, companies, agencies, and institutions dedicated to reshaping perceptions of popular transportation worldwide.
Popular transportation, also known as informal transport, paratransit, or artisanal transport, encompasses services characterized by varying degrees of informality in their operations. These services, privately owned and operated, are demand-driven, unscheduled, and flexible, differing in each country or city where they operate. From mini buses, cars, motorcycles, three-wheelers, bicycles, to boats, these services take different forms and names, such as matatus, boda-bodas, or piratas, but share a commonality—they fill transportation gaps in areas where government-provided options are limited or absent.
In this particular project, our focus is to gain a comprehensive understanding of media narratives surrounding popular transport services, specifically centering on two and three-wheelers, including motorcycles and auto-rickshaws (tuk-tuks). Our objective is to identify ways to enhance communication about the pivotal role these modes play in providing transport services and ensuring accessibility in cities across the Global South.
As we progress with this initiative, our upcoming steps involve the dissemination of knowledge products and the provision of training opportunities for journalists covering these topics. Your input in this survey is crucial, and rest assured, your responses will remain anonymous unless you express an interest in staying connected with us for the subsequent phases of this project.
We sincerely appreciate your support and the time you dedicate to completing this survey. Kindly assist us in spreading the word among your fellow journalists who cover transport-related subjects.
