Kwame Anthony Appiah on the Right—and Wrong—Way for Universities to Handle Identity

Kwame Anthony Appiah on the Right—and Wrong—Way for Universities to Handle Identity

Yascha Mounk and Kwame Anthony Appiah discuss cultivating thick identities (and thick skins).

Kwame Anthony Appiah is a British-Ghanaian philosopher, Professor of Philosophy and Law and New York University, and the “Ethicist” columnist for The New York Times Magazine.

In this week’s conversation, Yascha Mounk and Kwame Anthony Appiah discuss why universities discarded an ethic of common humanity for a new form of identitarianism; how we can recognize and respect individual and cultural diversity without making it the main factor in our interactions; and why faculty must be agents for the change they wish to see in universities.

This conversation is part of the Persuasion series “Universities, Diversity, and Democracy,” a new collection of podcasts and essays, featuring leading voices in higher education, that explores how universities can pursue truth in the spirit of philosophical liberalism and in pursuit of social progress. This series is made possible by the generous support of the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations.

    Coleman Hughes on Colorblindness

Coleman Hughes is a writer and the host of Conversations with Coleman. His new book is The End of Race Politics: Arguments for a Colorblind America.

In this week’s conversation, Yascha Mounk and Coleman Hughes discuss why race is a poor proxy for setting public policy; why being colorblind doesn’t mean disregarding one’s own cultural affinities; and how we can continue to make progress against racial discrimination without making the concept of race ever more central to our culture and politics.

Fantastic Show

A podcast for the old left. I do hope it does not get cancelled and Mounk is able to continue with having important conversations.

Propaganda masquerading as journalism

The episode with Anshel Pfeffer in the immediate weeks after October 7 does not age well 6 months later. The complete inability of the guest — or even the host — to imagine or articulate Palestinian suffering or Israeli oppression and instead to cast the conflict as one purely of irrational, religious hatred and terrorism does a disservice to listeners (not a single mention of colonization, ethnic cleansing, mass dispossession or apartheid is had). The questions asked are so obviously biased in favor of a pro-Israeli sympathy, which the guest shares, that there is a complete lack of any understanding of the situation they are supposed to be illuminating. The latent racism against Arabs and Palestinians is palpable beneath throw away lines of mourning any innocent life lost and then focusing exclusively on Israeli suffering. Not worth your—or anyone’s— time.
