Which Swedish artist has generated the highest payouts from Spotify since the streaming service launched in 2008?
No big surprises here: it’s Avicii, with estimated payouts of between $50.1m and $83.1m from the late dance star’s 13.19bn streams in that period.
Zara Larsson ($29m-$48.1m), Tove Lo ($22m-$36.5m) and ABBA ($20m-$33.2m) follow in the rankings published by researcher Daniel Johansson as part of his wider study of Spotify payouts for artists in its home country.
He analysed 267.8bn streams for 8,339 artists – every Swedish artist with more than 1m Spotify streams. Note, the payout estimates cover money paid to rightsholders for these artists’ music – how much the artists got would depend on their contracts.
Johansson also found that just four genres accounted for 79.6% of the total payouts for his dataset: pop, dance/electronic and hip-hop are three, while the fourth is… epadunk!
Alternatively written ‘epa dunk’, this bass-heavy genre with a strong cultural link to customised cars caught fire in Sweden in recent years.
