Things We Love: Couples With Height Differences

Things we love - couples with height differences

Once again, it’s time to talk about things queer womxn love when it comes to ships. We already covered wall make out scenes and things I don’t like IRL (my things) and grumpy/cheerful & blonde/brunette parings (Mika’s things). Today I bring you couples with height differences (aka smol and tol).

Why do we love it when one member of a couple is taller than the other? I have thought a lot about it. Maybe it’s because it messes with traditional gender roles to have a woman be taller person in a relationship. There’s also something hot about a taller woman being a protector, but then it’s an even better twist when the shorter person is the “tougher” one.

To be honest, I really can’t put my finger on it, but it’s definitely one of the top things we love in our couples.

Here are some of my favorite queer couples with height differences.

Cat and Sam on Lip Service
Cat and Sam Lip Service

I love the pairing of Sam the cop and Cat the sweet but neurotic architect. There’s just something so cute about Sam having to bend down to kiss Cat.

Yorkie and Kelly from Black Mirror

In this couple, Yorkie is the taller, shy and inexperienced person and Kelly is the short extrovert who brings her out of her shell. Flipping the cliche makes them even more cute.

Cheryl and Toni from Riverdale

There is so much I love about Cheryl and Toni. There is really no couple like them on TV. Even though Toni is a long time Serpent and Cheryl comes from a Wealthy family, Cheryl is tough and not someone you want as an enemy. I also love how the two actors are good friends in real life and have fought about which one is the top in this Riverdale relationship.

Nomi and Amanita from Sense8

In my opinion, Nomi and Amanita are the healthiest, most loving and supportive queer couple on TV. I love the pairing of Nomi the tall computer geek and Amanita her passionate girlfriend who will do anything for her.

Jo and Chase from Easy

I love in this scene, after their first date and a half, how Chase has to reach up to kiss Jo before she bikes off. These two are one of my favorite fictitious queer couples, because they feel very real. They’re like a couple I would be friends with in real life.

The third and final season was supposedly shot last Summer. There is no news on when it’s dropping on Netflix, but I hope we get more than one episode with them in it.

Waverly and Nicole from Wynonna Earp

I love lesbian cops, and Nicole is the perfect, tall, protective, sweet and tough sheriff of Purgatory. Her and Waverly together are ridiculously cute and I cannot wait to see what happens with them in season four this summer.

Sara and Ava from Legends of Tomorrow
Sara and Ava from Legends of Tomorrow

Praise Beebo for the Legends of Tomorrow writing team. They have given us one of the best shows and queer ships on television right now. Tall and serious Ava and fun and fierce Sara make such a perfect pair. They are one of the only couples I put my guard down for and just enjoy without fearing one of them will die at any moment. Well, Sara may die at any time, but I feel confident she’ll come back to life quickly.

Petra and JR from Jane the Virgin
Petra and JR from Jane the Virgin

In this scene, Petra finally lets herself be vulnerable with JR and tells her how much she likes her. The scene is extra sweet because Petra, who is usually very put together, is in her pajamas just after stress-eating pickles. The height difference just adds to this falling away of Petra’s emotional walls.

They are my favorite ship on air right now, and while it makes me incredibly sad season five (starting March 27, 2019) of Jane the Virgin will be its last, I can’t wait to see what happens with these two. If they are not endgame I will flip a table or 10.

Alex and Maggie from Supergirl

This couple is still painful to write about since they broke up last season, but I had to include them on my list. Alex and Maggie was my gateway ship that started my love of couples with height differences.

Maggie is the hot-headed cop who doesn’t take any shit, but is the shorter one of the two. This makes them extra cute to me. I’m still sad they were ripped away from us, but hopefully Alex will find love again.

Root and Shaw from Person of Interest
Root and Shaw from Person of Interest - This could take all night

Big surprise, Root and Shaw, my favorite ship of all time, are my number one tall/short couple. I know I’m a broken record, but just look at them!

Shooting guns.

Walking down the street.

Shooting more guns.

Shaw is a short, nearly feelings-less killer and Root is a tall, intense, computer hacker and assassin. They’re the perfect couple!

Those are my favorites, but I am sure I missed some! Who are your favorite couples with couples with height differences? Let us know in the comments!
