Today's Q&A features Jayna Rust, a Washington D.C. partner in the government contracts group. Q: What does being part of the AAPI community mean to you? A: I grew up in rural America and am a cross-racial adoptee; that meant that for much of my life I was around very few other Asian-Americans. It wasn’t until college that I encountered larger numbers of Asian-Americans, and I honestly did not feel like I was part of the same “community” as them given the differences in our experiences. Over time, though, I began to spend more time with other Asian-Americans and began to feel accepted as part of the community by many (but not necessarily all). There are still times that I question whether I am actually part of the Asian-American community, but I have come to accept that the Asian-American community is not a monolith, and we all bring our individual experiences to it. It certainly helps to have other Asian-American adoptees to talk with, too. Q: Are there AAPI figures who have inspired you in your journey? A: Growing up in the 80s, there were not a lot of Asian-Americans in pop culture. So, when I did see one, it was always something to celebrate. I remember watching "The Goonies" a LOT when I was a kid, and I loved Ke Huy Quan as Data. His comeback in "Everything Everywhere All At Once" decades later has been even better to see. I followed a lot of the interviews with him, and it is clear he has always had a love of acting and is truly enjoying doing it again. Seeing people do work that they enjoy is always inspiring. Diversity of thought is good for business, it results in higher profitability, and this, once again, has been proven by McKinsey in their Diversity Matters Even More Report, 2023. They found that companies that have racially diversity on their executive teams are 27% more likely to financially outperform their peers. Their research shows that 𝐧𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞.All organisations stand to gain from racial inclusion on their boards - schools, governments, companies, and civil society organisations.  Hong Kong is blessed with a vibrant ethnic minority community and since 2016 (with a brief hiatus for Covid), The Zubin Foundation has produced Diversity List, a directory of ethnic minorities that have the skills and commitment to serve on Hong Kong Advisory and Statutory Bodies (ASBs). The Hong Kong government has been supportive of Diversity List and over a period of 5 years (2016 to 2020)The Zubin Foundation has put forward a total of 122 individuals to the government to consider for its ASBs. 25 out of 122 of our candidates have been appointed to ASBs.  This is a tremendous achievement and represents a success rate of 20.5%.  We are working on Diversity List 2024 with our Knowledge Partner Spencer Stuart. In May, we come together to honor the rich cultures, histories and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the United States. This annual celebration recognizes the remarkable impact that AAPI individuals have made across various fields, from arts and sciences to politics and business. Origins and History:  The journey to officially recognize AAPI contributions began in the late 1970s. It took over a decade to establish a permanent month-long celebration. Here’s how it unfolded:  Asian-Pacific American Heritage Week: In 1977, New York Representative Frank Horton introduced House Joint Resolution 540, proposing the first 10 days of May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Week. Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye introduced a similar resolution the same year. President Jimmy Carter signed it into law in 1978. Expanding to a Month: From 1980 to 1990, each president issued annual proclamations for Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1990, Congress expanded the observance to an entire month. Thus, May was officially designated as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month in 1992 under the George H.W. Bush administration. In 2009, it was renamed to AAPI Month.  Let’s embark on a journey of discovery and learning. It’s a time to delve deeper into the stories, achievements and traditions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. As we wrapped up Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, I’m reflecting back on the summits, galas, and events I had the privilege of being a part of. The most meaningful aspect of these experiences has been the relationships and bridges we have built over the past few weeks. What truly stands out and fills me with optimism for the future of our community and society as a whole is the diverse representation of AAPI individuals in positions of power and influence. It feels like a distant memory when the majority of successful AAPI individuals were confined to careers as doctors, lawyers, and engineers. Now we are business executives, entrepreneurs, chefs, directors, activists, and creators, achieving incredible success by any measure. The days of keeping our heads down to assimilate and merely survive is gone. We are reaching a point in American history where many of us are feeling comfortable embracing who we are and are unbashful in expressing our authentic selves. We are no longer just surviving; we are thriving But we still have a long way to go - 1 in 2 Asian Americans feel unsafe in the U.S. and nearly 80% of Asian Americans do not completely feel they belong and are accepted. (STAATUS 2023) - In research of 400+ large US organizations, Asian Americans account for 9 percent of senior vice presidents but just 5 percent of promotions from senior vice president to the C-suite. Asian American women make up less than 1 percent of these promotions (McKinsey 2021) - Asian Americans workers are still seen as monolith even though, 35 percent are East Asian, 35 percent are Southeast Asian, and 27 percent are South Asian, 3 percent identify as others (McKinsey 2022) Individual representation continues to matter. If we want to achieve a meaningful scale of change for ourselves and future generations, we must build and strengthen those relationships within our community and also with our allies. Then it’s putting plans into action to GSD (Get Sh*t Done) I’m thankful for the pioneers and community leaders who paved the way for us to reach this historical turning point.
