Our 2022 Endorsements
Since May 2022, the VPIRG Votes Advisory Board and staff have solicited and reviewed countless applications for support, interviewed dozens of candidates, and deliberated for hours. Based on that research, we are pleased to share the following recommendations for the 2022 Election.
NOTE: These are the current endorsements that the VPIRG Votes Advisory Board has made thus far. The Board will continue to consider and make endorsements before the general election in November. BECCA BALINT FOR US CONGRESS
Becca has been a consistent, effective and fierce advocate for the public interest during her tenure as a state senator, and we have no doubt that as our next representative in the U.S. House she will not only continue that legacy.
Since being elected to the Vermont Senate in 2014, Becca has been remarkably effective in advancing a broad slate of progressive policies while gaining the trust and admiration of her colleagues.
She is someone who will fight passionately for Vermont with integrity and kindness—a quality that is in far too short supply in our politics these days.
This endorsement is a recognition of Sen. Balint’s tremendous track-record and incredible effectiveness as a champion for the public interest. It’s our strong belief that she is best situated to be an outstanding advocate for Vermont from day one.
Peter welch for us Senate
Throughout his career in Montpelier and Washington, Peter has been a champion on many of VPIRG’s core issues: climate, energy efficiency, health care, reproductive rights and voting rights to name a few.
Every step of the way, Peter has been open and engaging. He is proactive and collaborative. And he leads with his Vermont values.
That’s what we need in D.C. because, as an institution, the United States Senate is all but broken. On its best days, it is precariously balanced between those fighting for progress with those working to undermine democracy. One need look no further than today’s headlines from around the globe – our world is on fire, and the Senate refuses to act.
If elected, he has pledged to end the filibuster – that anachronistic, self-imposed rule of the Senate that has gridlocked our government. With that one change, progress on climate, reproductive liberty and voting rights becomes much more possible.
