President Biden’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has just taken another dangerous step towards finalizing approval for the Willow Oil Drilling Project – a proposed massive expansion of oil and gas drilling and extraction that would threaten wildlife and ecosystems in Alaska’s pristine Western Arctic.

The Biden administration will make a final decision on whether to approve the Willow project by March 6. That means there is still time to pressure the administration to reverse course and deny this planet-killing project!

I’m writing to express my grave concern about the final environmental impact statement for ConocoPhillips’ Willow Project in Alaska’s North Slope, and my outrage that the Biden Administration would even consider approvals for this project. This project’s life-threatening impacts extend from local to global. I urge you to do all you can to stop the Willow project from moving forward in any form before it’s too late.

The Willow Project is incompatible with President Biden’s climate agenda. We are already running out of time to avoid the most catastrophic outcomes of the climate crisis. Though Biden stated support for this project, it would make Biden’s own climate goals impossible to meet.

Global climate scientists have been clear: To avoid the irreversible climate devastation that will result from overshooting 1.5-degrees of global warming, we must end all new investment in fossil fuel projects and immediately begin to phase out production, keeping as much as 40 percent of the fossil fuels from already-developed fields in the ground. Approving any new fossil fuel infrastructure at this point is climate suicide.

The Willow Project would emit 287 million metric tons of pollution over the next 30 years. That’s equivalent to the annual emissions from 76 coal plants - one-third of all remaining U.S. coal plants. Extracting hundreds of millions of barrels of oil in Alaska would bake in higher temperatures in a region that’s already warming four times faster than the rest of the world, at the exact time when humanity must begin urgently phasing out fossil fuels.

In addition to accelerating irreversible climate change for the Arctic and the rest of the world, this project would also disproportionately affect the community of Nuiqsut, a predominantly Iñupiaq village of about 500 people who are already living through extreme pollution from existing oil projects.

Lastly, this project would threaten the delicate ecosystems and vital animal species native to the western Arctic region.

I stand in solidarity with the Alaska Natives who are working to protect their lands, waters, and our climate future, and strongly urge you to immediately deny the Willow Project permit.
