BREAKING! The Finnish government is officially ready to abolish the gambling monopoly! This was confirmed by Tytti Tuppurainen (SDP), Minister of European Affairs and ownership steering, an hour ago in an interview. Tuppurainen stated that "there is a unanimous view within the government on abandoning Veikkaus monopoly on digital games." Tuppurainen also said that she had rushed to start the study on pros and cons on the licensing system. According to Tuppurainen, if the study is started at the beginning of 2023, the next government can already decide on the transition to the licensing system in the government programme. The Ministry of the Interior will make the decision on starting the study phase in the beginning of next year. On practical terms this would hasten the transition easily by 6 months if not more! This is BIG NEWS, as regardless of the current governments programme, in which strengthening the monopoly system is the corner stone of the Finnish gambling policy, the government has decided not only to support the change but also to hasten it. I have an idea. Use any existing framework for platform requirements in the EU. Open sharing. Apply a 15% on GGR vat. Have a simple threshold for RG, 2k deposit for example as per the mga. Licences given after a short vetting process. Vetting on the directors. Cost of licence... 250k. Best licence ever.
I hope they learn from their neighbours how not to do it.
Excellent news! Should have happened 20 years ago but this is good news indeed.

1yWith this on the cards we might have a licensing system in place as early as 2025!
