The study of language through sign systems that represent “by-products” or substitutes of language as a means of communication is a direction in linguistics that adds to the knowledge about the productivity and language-generating potential of natural languages. Nonverbal language which boasts a plethora of wordless cues through which people communicate, includes postures, gestures, stances, and movements, all of which can be analyzed and explained through the use of the instruments of a semiotic methodology. For instance, the study of signs through the rituals, conventions and overall nonverbal interactions in the diaculture of modern Japanese martial arts, reveals interesting characteristics of the sign language used particularly in Kenjutsu and Aikido. The mentioned martial arts make wide use of nonverbal cues that are characterized by features of indexicality, iconicity and symbolicity, and echo concrete social norms and conventions. К семиотике айкидо. Опыт описания Г. А. Казарян ЕРЕВАНСКИЙ ГОСУДАРСТВЕННЫЙ УНИВЕРСИТЕТ Аннотация. Автор анализирует ключевые вопросы моделирования че-рез знаки невербальной коммуникации некоторых социальных и межлич-ностных отношений в диакультуре восточных боевых искусств. В част-ности, статья посвящена проблеме знаковости ключевых понятий японского боевого искусства айкидо и их проявления в среде тренировок. Особое внимание уделяется таким понятиям, как центр («хара»), дистан-ция («маай»), меч («катана»), анализ которых выявляет концептуальные связи между конвенциональными формами «ката», конкретными жестами, и идеологией айкидо. Исходя из того положения невербальные знаки в боевых эпизодах являются кинетическим коррелятом конкретных рече-вых актов, проводится параллель с речевой коммуникацией. Статья яв-ляется первой попыткой изучения диакультуры айкидо в свете совре-менных исследований семиотики и теории речевой коммуникации. The paper is a theoretical overview of the opposition between the "own " and the " other " at the metalinguistic level of cross-cultural communicative acts. The topic is discussed within the theoretical frameworks of Translation Studies, Cultural Semiotics and Pragmalinguistics. Special attention is paid to the concept of intentionality in the process of delineating the " own " from the " other " , which in its turn is viewed as a culture-bound phenomenon emerging on the cross-cultural discourse level through culture-bound elements. The research on the binary opposition of " own vs. other " usually revolves around the concepts of " ego " and " alter " , gaining importance within the studies of modern societies. The theoretical background of the topic has been enriched considerably by contributions from the fields of Semiotics and Sociology, particularly, thanks to the works of Bakhtin, Lotman, Sonesson and others....
