Here’s the vibe at GDC as far as I can tell so far: - Seems like noticeably fewer people. Probably layoffs and companies cutting cost by sending fewer people. - Lots of people laid off / looking for jobs. - Mobile F2P & console is dead for all but the big publishers - Work for hire devs still struggling but business starting to pick up. - web3 on fire - games & tokens launching. VCs actively funding. - Not as much Roblox/UEFN noise as I was expecting but those tend to be smaller devs. Does this jive with what you are hearing?
I guess my experience is a bit different. I've been booked with wall to wall meetings, great discussions and even my short lecture toward end of day was well attended. I have a feeling of cautious optimism. I do expect that when a third of us fly to Boston on Thursday for PAX that it will be a little diminished. They can fix that for next year with no overlap, lol. Anyway, I am exhausted and happy and off to find a beer or three now. :)
Definitely think that things pick up on Wednesday when the Expo floor opens. Unreal has an event tomorrow morning and every year it seems that they wait to show their cards until this event, so vibes might change slightly towards the end of the week.
What's your definition of dead in regards to mobile f2p. It's around 50% of the gaming revenue this year
This aligns with the expectations I had of this years GDC. Though I will admit surprise at the lack of UEFN/Roblox. I thought more developers/publishers would be starting to shoot some exploratory beacons on goal here. This is likely due to still seeing it as small potato’s but enough small potato’s are good enough for a stew that could feed many and not break your bank account in the process. I know you generally aren’t there for the talks but I would also imagine there is more conversation around sustainable development and publishing.
I also notice that publishers and VCs want to see games and pitches much further along than in past years: full playables and a thriving community already behind the game.
Been on the fence if I should make a last minute trip down to GDC on Friday. As a CS student graduating this year looking to get into game development, do you guys think it's worth it?
What's your definition of web3 on fire? Like, the hype is strong with this one, or are any major successes being discussed? (genuine question - i lost interest after seemingly 10.000 launches and 9.998 crashes under that unbrella so I'm not up to date)
Sounds like a mix of challenges and opportunities in the industry right now. 🔥
Surprised Apple wasn't there since they just launched VisionPro, would think they would want to entice more devs to put their games on their new product

2moIt seems more indie focused. The layoffs caused a lot of people to eat away at their nest egg while they actively apply to jobs. Chances are that may be why fewer people are at GDC. Plus they probably didn't want to support the companies that did the layoffs; However with the increase in new companies and talent, I do expect more people to attend the next GDC. Outsourcing seems to also be increasing too Takeaways from this: VCs never dried out as the market tried stating. Companies are still investing more than ever. They're more directed towards blockchain and Web3 companies though. VR is increasing rapidly in the market. It's the lesser of the two to be a work for hire instead of struggling to get in the door of another company. I suspect the market to be leaning more towards this. Companies already outsource work a lot now instead of doing things internal.
