Good news about European venture performance is always welcome! 🇪🇺 🥳 But...and actually there are many "buts" on this one...these numbers are pretty meaningless. Where to start? - Apparently the European data is based on just 223 European VC funds spanning vintages from 1986 to 2023*. That's a low single digit percentage of the total number of European VC funds raised over that time. That's incredibly statistically insignificant. - It's IRR and not DPI. IRR can be more easily manipulated. It's done a lot. DPI matters way, waaay more than IRR. - The numbers are of unrealized performance. 😳 Which we all know you can't eat, and can also be rigged. Seriously, who gives a shit about unrealized gains? - Despite all that the numbers end up so close anyways that they're within any reasonable margin of error. So pretty neck and neck in an illiquid asset class. 🤷🏼‍♂️ - Also, let's be honest, averages don't matter in venture. It's a top decile driven asset class. It's all about outliers. That's way more important than geography. European VC is notoriously opaque. Academics often avoid including it in research on VC because of this. Much of European government LP data isn’t public, and government LPs make up a large chunk of LP commitments in Europe. Also, there have been examples of European government LPs selling underperforming fund stakes to other government buyers to prop up their numbers. Any report should be taken with a grain of salt. It’s adorable though that some quickly point to it having to be accurate simply because CA is involved, as if CA is infallible. CA has an agenda in doing this for a client (Invest Europe) which itself has an agenda to push. European venture has made great progress. It's a strong asset class that deserves more LP attention (much of the upside in European tech goes to North American LPs). Let the real numbers speak for themselves though. This ain't that. What would be the future of documents in the new AI world? I think we will see significant changes outside the contracts and legally binding documents. The most important change will be that content is more generated v/s written. 1. Creation and Writing ⏩ Generation and Editing. 2. Static documents ⏩ Live/Fluidic/Assembly of content. 3. Searching of docs ⏩ Querying for info. 4. Same doc for all ⏩ Personalized info for each. 5. Text-heavy docs ⏩ Multi-modal and info-rich. 6. Coarse Access control ⏩ Fine-grained node level access control. 7. Version control of doc ⏩ Version control of node. 8. Remembering docs ⏩ Remembering prompts/queries. This transition will take time, but I am seeing the beginning. What else one should expect to see?

How the best SEIS & EIS investors harness the power law 👇 Nothing shapes investor returns more than the Power Law – the principle that a small number of investments generate the majority of returns. It also means that most startups won't return any value at all. For early-stage SEIS / EIS investors, the Power Law is even more pronounced because of: 👉 High Risk: Investing at the earliest stages is risky, leading to more losses compared to investing in more established companies. 👉 High Reward: Early-stage investments have lower valuations, meaning a winning investment can deliver massive returns and drive the entire portfolio's success. 📈 Early-Stage Investing Dynamics As an SEIS/EIS investor, you capitalise on low valuations during early-stage investments, allowing for more substantial equity stakes with comparatively minimal capital. This entry point aligns with the Power Law because a few successful startups can provide outsized returns, offsetting the many that underperform. ❌ Navigating High Failure Rates With most startups failing, you should adopt a portfolio approach. By investing broadly, you increase your chances of landing a few blockbuster successes. This strategy, akin to the Babe Ruth effect (swing big, miss big), focuses on achieving enough home runs to cover all the strikeouts. ⛑ Risk / Reward Management To be a good S/EIS investor, you need to understand and embrace the high risk nature of startup investing. Focus on the potential for outsized returns from a select few investments rather than avoiding failures. This risk tolerance is key for leveraging the Power Law - minimising losses can miss opportunities for significant gains. So, the lesson...you need to accept high failure rates while aiming for substantial returns through careful selection and diversification. This ensures that while most investments won’t yield any returns, a few high performers can drive significant overall gains. Capital at risk. PT1 Family Day (https://lnkd.in/dMzngJGk) Sifted (Financial Times) broke the news this morning that we led an excellent consortium of investors including Commerzbank Group's Neosfer, 468 Capital, Maximilian Tayenthal and the scout founds from Hedosophia & Andreessen Horowitz in the seed-round of Berlin-based Terra One - a special warm welcome to Tony Schumacher & Thomas Antonioli! This is not only portfolio company #23 for the PT1 funds but also our second bet on battery storage technology. Why are we so bullish on this sector and Terra One specifically? Decentralized storage enables the green energy transition by offloading stressed grids and also already today can earn decent $$/€€ if the operations & energy trading is done in a clever way, what is exactly Terra One's AI-enabled secret sauce. These IRRs are highly attractive for deep-pocket infra/renewable-investors that need to look beyond traditional solar, wind and RE-assets as the ROIs there are melting off.

I had the pleasure of co-hosting a roundtable with two amazing investors, Noa Shamay from Cardumen Capital and Miriam Shtilman Lavsovski from Tal Ventures, as part of Fusion’s pre-seed fundraising conference. My main takeaway? There are no rules when it comes to pre-seed rounds. Forget the clickbait headlines—each startup is unique, and so is every round of funding. Here’s what I shared: 💡No cookie-cutter solutions – Every startup and every round is unique. Forget those “10 things you need to do” lists (and yes, I am aware of the irony of it being the first thing on this list - but stand by it!). Do your research and customize your approach. 💡Understand investor strategies – Investors have different playbooks. You’ll come across two types: ➡️➡️Pre-seed-focused investors like Fusion VC, who have clear criteria and look to invest in a lot of different startups with smaller checks. ➡️➡️Occasional pre-seed investors, who invest in pre-seed on a case-by-case basis. Figuring out why they’ve invested in certain pre-seed rounds might take some detective work—talking to other founders who raised pre-seed funding from them is a great start. 💡Investment thesis matters – Each investor has a thesis driving their decisions. If you can connect your pitch to their pre-seed thesis, you’ll be one step ahead. Figure out why they would do a pre-seed round and not a seed round - what significant milestones can be reached with the pre-seed funding? What advantages does the investor gain in terms of position or access in the company to compensate for the risk of pre-seed funding? 💡Prepare to fundraise – The best advice? Lean on your network. Like everything else in the Israeli Eco-system - use your network. people love to help. talk to founders who have raised funding from the investors you’re targeting, or to other investors who invested alongside them. Like everything else in managing your startup - plan out the best pipeline, process and pivot for you fundraise. this isn’t pivoting your company (at least not necessarily) but pivoting your presentation. work in bulks of around 5 investors, and try to start with at least 5 investors you’re not really interested to raise money from. after every bulk of investors, go over the feedback, find trends, and pivot your presentation.
