I share Richard Tofel's belief that foundations should directly fund newsrooms. But it’s also important to contextualize how organizations like News Revenue Hub empower newsrooms to go beyond grant support to fund themselves. The Hub expects to have raised $80M for newsrooms by the end of 2022, a major milestone. Every dollar of that goes directly into newsrooms’ general operating budgets. It’s not grant-restricted and they can spend it however they want. This gives newsrooms control over their own destinies. And we’ve done all this with just $4.1 million in general operating grants to the Hub since 2016. It's hard to argue with that ROI. https://lnkd.in/gFZn6DE2
Mary, Thanks for engaging on this. Just want to confirm: is the $80 million figure the total raised by those working with you under your guidance? If so, doesn’t it assume they would all have otherwise raised nothing? Is that reasonable? Also, do your clients pay in any way for your services above and beyond the grants you mention? Not disputing that the ROI may still be quite robust, just trying to better understand.
Thanks for posting
