The American Civil Liberties Union is outraged by President Joe Biden’s decision to move forward with building congressionally authorized barriers along the United States’ southern border with Mexico, characterizing it as a “profound betrayal.”

“The Biden administration’s decision to rush into border wall construction marks a profound failure,” said ACLU Director of Border Strategies Jonathan Blazer in a statement. “On the campaign trail, President Biden put it best when he said that the border wall is not a serious policy solution – and we couldn’t agree more. Instead of upholding this promise, the Biden administration is doubling down on the failed policies of the past that have proven wasteful and ineffective.”

“This politically motivated action will only harm border communities. It’s time for the Biden administration to choose humanity and real solutions over politics,” he added.

“President Biden ran on the campaign promise of no bans, no wall. Now, he’s said yes to an extreme asylum ban and yes to expediting construction of a dangerous and ineffective border wall in Texas,” affirmed the organization’s official account on X. “It’s a profound betrayal.”

On Thursday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas waived 26 federal laws in order to resume construction on the border wall.

“There is presently an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries into the United States in the project areas,” wrote Mayorkas.

Biden insisted on Thursday that he did not believe physical barriers were an effective method for addressing the ongoing crisis at the border.
