Something Old, New, Borrowed and Blue - a marriage made in renewable heaven? Vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWT) is reasonably old tech, off-shore floating wind is relatively new, why not borrow from each other, combine and test on the great big blue..... SeaTwirl AB just received the green-light to test an array of their vertical-axis #floatingoffshorewind turbines in #norway .Lots of potentially interesting benefits, from being able to pack them closer together, to being able to keep all the main components in the base of the turbine (vs the top), which lowers the centre of gravity and enables a much simpler, cheaper platform design (as well as easier maintenance). And if I understand a US Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), U.S. Department of Energy article correctly, the platform is the biggest capital cost item for floating off-shore wind, whereas for on-shore wind, it is the turbine itself which accounts for about 65% of the costs (not the base/platform). With the aim of accompanying and driving this evolution, BW Ideol now offers a standardised floating foundation product - based on the Damping Pool® solution in operation since 2018 in France and Japan. This universal floating foundation is optimised for all meteocean conditions prevailing on the main floating wind markets (with three product classes adapted to different environmental conditions) and compatible with all 15 MW+ wind turbines currently available. This product retains the competitive advantages of the Damping Pool® patent, particularly its compactness, with dimensions limited to 54 metres, and its shallow draft, below 12 metres in operation. It can be easily scalable to the next 20 MW+ wind turbines when available. TYPES OF WIND TURBINES: - Wind turbines are categorized into two main categories as presented in Figure. 1- A wind turbine on the horizontal axis (HAWT) where the blades are turning in a parallel axis relative to the ground. 2- A vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) where the blades are rotating in a perpendicular axis relative to the ground. For each of the two general types of wind turbine, much development taking place driven by intensive research and effort is going on around the world with several modifications of the primary version of this type of wind turbine. HAWT has a main problem; it’s that we should always point it to the direction of the wind in order to function properly. VAWT is inefficient at high speed wind since it has a minimal starting torques and issues affecting the stability of its dynamics. It is also sensitive to backtracking since the wind and the blades move in the same direction which effects the blades and force them to move back into the wind flow before they are pushed back around. It is essential to keep in mind that some studies comparing HAWT to VAWT have presented varied results.
