5 teens arrested in Downtown Crossing attack of woman wearing braids part of ‘specific group of violent juveniles,’ Boston police say

Five teenagers arrested in connection with a Downtown Crossing attack on a woman wearing braids is the latest in a recent string of incidents involving a “specific group of violent juveniles,” according to Boston police.

A person called 911 around 7 p.m., telling police a group of 10 to 15 girls were attacking two females near the intersection of Winter Street and Washington Street, according to a partially redacted police report.

When police arrived on scene, officers said they saw about 20 teenagers in the area and were approached by a woman who “appeared to be in distress and highly animated” with a large bump forming on the right side of her head, the report states.

A witness showed the officers a cellphone video of the woman, who was born in 2002, being punched and kicked numerous times by a group of about five people who appeared to be teenagers, the report said.

The woman told police that she had been standing at the intersection when a group of girls approached her, calling her a “white b---- with braids,” the report states.

She told the girls she identified as Hispanic and started to walk away, but the woman said a girl came up and pulled her hair and then the group began to punch and kick her.

The woman was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for further evaluation, according to the report.

From watching the video, police identified four females and one male born between 2007 and 2010 participating in the attack on the woman.

The male juvenile spit at an officer while he was being placed under arrest and a female opened a cruiser door in what police saw as an attempt to free the teenagers that had already been arrested. She also allegedly punched a police officer when he intervened in her attempt, according to the police report. The officer then arrested the female.

Another female suspect allegedly pulled an officer’s hair out of a secured bun and knocked their glasses off, according to the report.

All five teenagers were arrested and taken to District A-1 for booking, the report said.

The district has received a “recent barrage of juvenile incidents,” according to the report, including teenagers fighting in public, smashing storefront windows, committing aggravated assaults, and assaulting police officers.

The incidents include the March 21st attack of an 81 year-old man at a McDonald’s on Washington Street by four juveniles. Three juveniles also allegedly shattered the Silvertone Bar and Grill’s storefront window on the same day when their attempts to order alcohol were denied, police reported.

On March 23, three juveniles were involved in a fight at Black Seed Cafe that was classified as an aggravated assault & battery, according to the report.
