There’s no shortage of moonlit musings prompted by staring into the night sky, including poetic contemplations, insightful ponderings, sarcastic quips, and the occasional sonata. Many of these quotes about the Moon are imaginings, longings, things left unexpressed, and other parts of our human experience that we tend to keep in the shadows.

That’s not surprising. Fearing we will be misunderstood or deemed weird, humans sometimes hide or don’t flaunt certain parts of ourselves. That’s not unlike the behavior attributed to the unfortunate phrase “lunatic,” which can be traced back to the Old French word lune and literally meant “Moon sick.” It was a term intended to describe someone who struggled at times. As we all do. Even Shakespeare wrote, “It is the very error of the moon. She comes more near the earth than she was wont. And makes men mad.”

Perhaps rather than blame the Moon, we can perceive her as a confidant of sorts. According to astrology, the Moon holds sway over our emotional side and can reflect these unexpressed parts of ourselves back to us. That’s the intention of our Moon sign, which is whatever zodiac sign was obsessed with the Moon at the moment of our birth. It’s believed to lend insight into how you may express or repress your emotions, making the Moon a keeper of quiet secrets at times and an exquisite teller of truth at others.
