SoundCloud has rolled out a new group of playlists focused on new music. There are ‘Buzzing Playlists‘ for electronic music, hip-hop and rap, pop and R&B, but it’s the feeder system determining which tracks are featured that’s interesting.

It all ties into the ‘First Fans’ initiative that SoundCloud launched last year, recommending tracks by artists in its ‘Next Pro’ tier to up to 100 listeners who should like them. That has since been updated to up to 1,000 listeners.

Now the company will be taking “the highest performing tracks of those recommended” – the ones that get the most likes, comments, reposts, replays and playlist adds – and curating them in the new playlists. And ‘Buzzing Playlists’ is, in turn, a step on the ladder towards SoundCloud’s established editorial playlists, and ultimately its charts.

The company also says that since ‘First Fans’ launched, it has seen more than 3.5m tracks analysed and recommended to listeners, with the average artist seeing a 400% increase in streams.
