April 18: RHP hit with liner, suffers right elbow contusion
Nelson was struck on the right elbow by a line drive in the second inning against the Giants and was forced to leave the game. X-rays were taken and came back negative, but there was still quite a bit of swelling and stiffness in the elbow after the game. The D-backs will wait until Friday to see how it responds to treatment overnight before making a determination on Nelson’s status. More >>

April 17: LHP Eduardo Rodriguez transferred to 60-day IL
Five days after the D-backs paused Rodriguez’s rehab process, the club placed him on the 60-day IL, retroactive to March 25. D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said there wasn’t anything new that came up, but that he was likely to miss that amount of time after the setback. He is eligible to come off the IL on May 24.

“I want to believe he’s going get strong, healthy and magically come back sooner than later,” Lovullo said. “But I don’t think that’s going to happen. We’re going to slow play this.”

Rodriguez, who signed a four-year, $80 million contract during the offseason, suffered a left lat strain towards the end of Spring Training and had been throwing bullpen sessions to rehab from the injury. But after one session three days ago, he felt tightness in the lat and an MRI showed that there was still an issue. For now, he’s been shut down from throwing.

April 17: RHP and LHP recalled from Triple-A Reno, RHP Luis Frías and LHP sent down
Henry was competing to stay in the rotation, but after allowing five runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings in his start on Tuesday against the Cubs and Jordan Montgomery making his first start on April 19 in San Francisco, the D-backs sent the lefty down to Reno. Henry compiled a 6.87 ERA over four starts. Frías struggled with his consistency, compiling a 9.95 ERA across seven appearances.

Martinez put up a 2.70 ERA in Triple-A, leading the Aces relievers with 14 strikeouts. Allen provides length out of the bullpen, which is crucial for the D-backs since they are coming off back-to-back extra-inning games. In three appearances with Triple-A Reno, which include two starts, Allen has a 3.00 ERA and struck out nine batters in 12 innings.

April 17: C Gabriel Moreno (right thumb contusion) scratched from lineup
For the second consecutive day, Moreno was scratched from the starting lineup with a right thumb contusion. Moreno suffered the injury in the ninth inning Monday when he tried to block a wild pitch by Kevin Ginkel. The ball bounced off the ground and then hit Moreno in the right thumb before kicking away from him, allowing Nico Hoerner to score all the way from second for the tying run.

Moreno came off the bench in Tuesday’s extra-inning game to catch, but Lovullo wanted to avoid getting him an at-bat so he could heal more. Lovullo added pregame on Wednesday morning that Moreno was “so far, so good."

10-day IL

OF (strained left hamstring)
Expected return: TBD
Thomas has resumed hitting in sim games but doesn’t run the bases in those games or play the field. He has started doing some light sprints and agility in a straight line. Thomas injured his left hamstring when he grounded into a double play in the first inning on March 31 against the Rockies. He stayed in the game but was replaced defensively in the fourth inning, and underwent an MRI on April 1 that showed a strain in the hamstring that was greater than a Grade 1, but not quite a Grade 2. SS (right meniscus tear)
Expected return: Early to mid May
Perdomo underwent surgery on his right meniscus on April 8 and will likely miss at least a month. The shortstop exited Arizona's game on April 3 against the Yankees while rounding the bases in extra innings. An MRI on April 6 revealed a tear in his right meniscus. (Last updated: April 12)

RHP (strained left oblique)
Expected return:
TBD
Sewald, who is on the injured list for the first time in his career, threw his first bullpen session on April 13. Sewald threw a 25-pitch session April 16. In late March, an MRI showed a Grade 2 oblique strain, and while manager Torey Lovullo declined to give a timeline for Sewald's return, the skipper said the D-backs' closer would be out a matter of "weeks, not days." 60-day IL

LHP (left lat strain)
Expected return
: May or June
Rodriguez's throwing program was paused after he experienced some discomfort in the left lat following an April 9 bullpen session. On April 17, he was moved to the 60-day IL. The southpaw was removed on March 19 against the Cubs in a Cactus League game with left lat tightness after completing his warmup tosses for the second inning. An MRI taken the following day showed a strain, and was placed on the injured list to open the year. (Last updated: April 17)
