Spectech Field Strategist Cohort Application Form
Come design a research program to unlock powerful materials or manufacturing technology with a small cohort of other field strategists at Speculative Technologies! Read more about the role here.

You’ll produce:
  • A network of people who are excited to work towards your vision of a technology or field that needs to be built.
  • A detailed roadmap of the specific work that needs to happen to unlock this technology. (example here)
The project:
  • Pitch an idea related to our scope: big-if-true technologies in materials and manufacturing that need coordinated systems work. For inspiration, take a look at this list. You're welcome to run with or riff on any of those ideas.
When: Nine months, full time; potentially extending to up to five years to run a full program.
Applications close on 2 Jun 2023, acceptances will be sent out by mid June 2023 and the Cohort will start at the beginning of August 2023.

About Us
Speculative Technologies is a nonprofit organization that runs coordinated research programs to unlock big-if-true materials and manufacturing technologies that are too speculative for startups but too engineering- or coordination-heavy for a single academic lab.

How to Apply
Write a 1-2 page program proposal and fill out this form. There is no specific format for the proposal, but some questions the proposal should try to answer, as specifically and with as little jargon as possible, are:
  • What would the program’s technological goals be?
  • Who would care if you accomplish those goals? (And ideally, why should the world more generally care)
  • What work would need to be done to accomplish those goals?
  • What is the state of the field or technology today and why hasn’t the work you’re describing happened?
Bonus points for fermi estimates that illustrate why the work is important, unintuitive, or why you think it will succeed.

If the 1-pager looks good, we’ll reach out and have a video chat. Then, we’ll spend some time refining the proposal and have you give a quick talk at our lab meeting in order to give us each a chance to see how the other works and thinks.

Some legal notes on the one page proposal:
  • We will acknowledge receipt, though may not provide detailed feedback.
  • We will not share your proposal outside Speculative Technologies without your permission, unless you specify otherwise.
  • But please do not disclose confidential, un-filed IP in your proposal.
Provide a link to your 1-page program proposal (Google Docs with commenting enabled are ideal but anything else is ok too): *
Name (First, Last)
Email address *
Link to your Linkedin, portfolio, or some other way to get a sense of work you've done in the past *
