The three-month lockdown in India necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic hurt a lot of industries across the country. But one sector for which the business boomed like never before was the sexual wellness products market in India. As people continue to stay indoors in many parts of the country, the sale of sex toys and other adult products has increased by 65% in the post-lockdown phase.
These are the findings of an analytical survey conducted by ThatsPersonal.com, a sexual health and wellness product retailer.
The survey, called India Uncovered: Insightful Analysis of Sex Products' Trends in India, was generated after a study of over 22 million visitors on the brand’s site, which resulted in approximately 3.35 lakh sex product orders and a little below 5 lakh products sold.
One of the key findings of the research is that while males tend to spend more time on the site while ordering, females make larger purchases. Even as 64% of all buyers are male, there are several cities that boast of more female buyers than male. These include even smaller cities like Vijayawada, Jamshedpur, Belgaum, and Jabalpur. Mumbai remains the city with the highest sale of sex products, followed by Bengaluru in second, and Delhi in third position. Among tier-2 cities, Lucknow registers the highest sale of sex toys, followed by Jaipur and Chandigarh. Interestingly, according to the survey, it is Surat that sees the highest amount per order, with buyers from the Gujarat city averaging Rs 3,900 per order.
Samir Saraiya, CEO of ThatsPersonal.com, says, "It's been a great journey so far with interesting learnings coming from our data mining and analytics. We find the market rapidly growing as Indians have shed their inhibitions and are open to experiment and try out new products."
