Mumbai is home to the highest number of billionaires in the country with 72 billionaires living in the city, according to Hurun Global Rich List 2022.

New Delhi: Mumbai is home to the highest number of billionaires in the country with 72 billionaires living in the city, according to Hurun Global Rich List 2022. The 2022 Hurun Global Rich List ranked 3,381 billionaires from 2,557 companies and 69 countries. Around 2,071 billionaires saw their wealth increase, of which 490 were new faces. Meanwhile, 942 billionaires saw their wealth decrease, and there were 129 drop-offs while 35 billionaires had died. Around 368 billionaires saw their wealth stay the same.

Delhi came second with 51 billionaires living in the city while Bengaluru came third with 28 billionaires, the Hurun Global Rich List 2022 revealed.

India home to richest aviation billionaires in world

With a wealth of $4.3 billion and $4.2 billion respectively, Rakesh Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia and family of ‘Indigo’ airlines are the wealthiest aviation billionaires, according to Hurun Global Rich List 2022. The Interglove co-founders improved their rank by 231 positions over the last five years.

India now has 249 billionaires of which 215 of them live in the country. The number of Indian billionaires has doubled every five years for the last decade, the report stated.

Top 3 cities in India with highest number of millionaires

  1. Mumbai – 20,300 millionaires
  2. Delhi – 17,400 millionaires
  3. Kolkata – 10,500 millionaire

With 20,300 millionaires (USD) households, Mumbai is India’s millionaire capital, followed by Delhi and Kolkata with 17,400 and 10,500 millionaire households respectively.

The number of dollar-millionaire households in India has increased by 11 per cent to 4,58,000 households compared to last year. These households have a net worth of at least Rs seven crores, the Hurun India Wealth Report 2021 had stated earlier. The number of Indian dollar-millionaire households is estimated to increase by 30 per cent over the next five years to reach 6,00,000 households by 2026.

Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and Chief Researcher, Hurun India said, “India is home to one of the fastest growing affluent households in the world and hence, the next decade presents a meaningful opportunity for luxury brands and service providers to enter/ further strengthen presence in India. It is interesting to note that some of the most favored brands of the survey respondents do not have physical presence in India.”
