✨ STORY TIME: how i went VIRAL on TikTok with a clever spelling mistake ✨

TikTok! Love it, hate it, or scared of it, it's teeming with potential and isn't going anywhere fast. In my opinion, it's one of the first properly exciting social media platforms in a long time.

Right, the experiment. Is it possible to figure out a 'go viral on TikTok formula?' Well, I like a challenge, I like a sprinkling of logic, and I like to try break things. I recently tested out this winning combination: Here's the final video.

  • Cute video of a dog (always a crowd pleaser)
  • Trending music (appears in more searches)
  • Deliberate spelling mistake/pun (to encourage comments and reach)
  • A handful of highly-viewed hashtags (appears in more searches)

The results

  • 404,000+ views
  • 150+ new followers
  • x1 article on the mirror website

So, that spelling mistake?

I knew that teens learn about 'angles' in school, and I knew that there could be comments about this dog being 'acute.'

I knew this, because I remember us all making the 'acute' jokes from my time in secondary school.

Sure I'm 26 now, but there are literally only 3 jokes you can make in maths class, right? An evergreen classic.

I knew that the older zillennial and millennial viewers would probably have seen Hot Fuzz and would recognise (and comment) the Sgt.Angle/Angel joke. This is your sign to rewatch it, by the way.

And, it worked. They came and they commented. One of the first 'acute' comments alone received nearly 10k likes.

The learnings?

  • Use trending visual + audio effects quickly, to your advantage.
  • Know your audience, thoroughly. Use clever cultural references to set up comments.
  • It's ok if the content isn't overly polished or edited.
