The message I wish I’d read when I first began writing on

.

  1. You don’t need a niche to get started.

  2. You do need to love what you’re writing.

  3. You do need to feel the positive pressure of longing to write and connect your ideas with others.

  4. The niche will find you if you keep responding to and working with your instincts.

  5. I didn’t say agree blindly with your instincts. I said work with them.

  6. Finding readers will help, but it won’t substitute for the “work.”

  7. The niche that emerges (and lasts) will be deeply connected to you.

  8. I know this is disappointing news.

  9. But nobody wants a Frankenstein that you’ve crafted from a lifetime of pretending. They just want you.

  10. It’s OK if you care about lots of things. Write about them until you’re exhausted.

  11. Then keep writing about the thing that never gets tiring.

  12. You are not a niche.

  13. People are very busy and need a little help.

  14. Organizing your work is how you help them join you in the things you love.

  15. This packaging is not abandoning yourself. It is an outcome of listening deeply to yourself and what you want in this life.

  16. People always like presents.
