people have been asking me a lot about subject lines lately. so here is my formula for choosing the perfect set of 3-7ish words that encapsulate a stunningly gorgeous email.
there are three approaches (person and mood dependent, ofc) to writing a subject line that may prevent you from crumbling under the weight of the first impression and they go like this:
understand your goal. decide what your ideal outcome is and just GOOO for it. if you are providing relevant value for someone in your email, don’t bury the lead, be specific and show it to them right away! eg. Manifesting a collaboration in London
sent an intention for how you’d like someone to feel receiving your email/dm. (my intention, almost always: when someone opens my email I’d like for them to feel like it’s a good omen.) choose one line from your email that best exemplifies that intention and go with that. eg. I'd like to experience the best cappuccino in cambridge
say how you’re actually feeling about reaching out in the moment. this is underrated, but can be such a great strategy to get someone curious enough to open your email. not in a click-bait-y way but in an earnest way. sharing nerves or excitement right away can be a lovely way to begin a connection. eg. Took me 3 whole months to send this.
subject lines are harrrrrrd, especially when you're feeling the pressure to stand out in a crowded inbox. but the good news is, it's actually not that serious so all else fails, take a breath and let it rip !
